Born in Austria in 1889, Adolf Hitler rose to power in German politics as leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, also known as the Nazi Party. He was chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945, and served as dictator from 1934 to 1945. His policies started World War II and the Holocaust. Hitler committed suicide with his wife Eva Braun on April 30, 1945, in his Berlin bunker.
He had a poor relationship with his father and was drawn to German nationalism at an early age. He dropped out of school at 16 and had to live in a homeless shelter for several years. It is thought that this is where some of his anti-Semitic beliefs started. He fought in World War I and was decorated for his bravery. He became involved in the German’s Worker Party and was later in charge of propaganda. The party was small at first but Hitler’s great skill of oratory attracted more and more listeners and it soon became a major party with many followers. This later became known as the Nazi Party. Later he became chancellor of Germany with much support from the German people. Many German people looked to Hitler for hope and answers after the WWI. He promised to rebuild the Glorious Germany of the past. First he started to build up the Wehrmacht. Factories started putting out weapons and people now had jobs. To the Germans, this was a very good sign. Mass rallies were held, where Hitler continued to use his powers of speech on the German people.
